In August 2006, the Springfield Regional Arts Council released a new coloring and activity book as part of its commitment to character education. The 32-page book features “Character Ed” visiting local sites and explaining the various character-building words.
”Each Character Ed Partner was challenged to come up with a way to help integrate the character words into the community,” says Arts Council Education and Co-Interim Director Addy McCord. “We decided that a coloring book would showcase the talents of our Arts Council staff and give us an incentive to hand out in our education programs.” Those programs include a summer workshop for children from the Springfield Community Center, participation in the Springfield-Greene County Park Board’s after school program, CLICK, and a Partner in Education relationship with Field Elementary.
The coloring book is available at the Creamery Arts Center and at the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, which is leading the community-wide character education program. The books, which are being distributed at no cost, were paid for through funding from a federal education grant and the Missouri Arts Council. Staff artist Robyn Rognstad did the design, with assistance from Mika Logan and oversight from Addy McCord.
Pages from the book and additional hand-outs are available to download online on the Arts Council website.
