Springfield Public Schools

The Springfield Public School district is proud to partner with the Chamber in promoting character education in our schools.  Character education has been an integral part of the Guidance and Counseling curriculum for many years, so the district’s support of the Character Ed “Word of the Month” was a natural fit.

To show their support, the Board of Education provided financial resources for schools to expand existing programs or to implement new initiatives in the area of character education.  During the 2006-07 school year, funding will be available to hire a part-time Character Education Facilitator to assist the schools in the integration of character education into the core curriculum.  The intention is to align character education with subject area major instructional goals, so that students understand the importance of using positive character traits in all aspects of their lives.  It is not designed to be another “add-on” program.

Each SPS school is committed to supporting the Character Ed initiative.  Every building is promoting the “Word of the Month” in some way, with a variety of classroom lessons and all-school activities.  The ultimate goal of character education is to improve student achievement and behavior.  In the educational setting, character education may address such critical concerns as student absenteeism, discipline problems, drug abuse, gang violence, teen pregnancy and poor academic performance.
